You are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name, lead me out of this danger. Pull me from the trap my enemies set for me, for I find protection in you alone I entrust my spirit into your hand. Rescue me, Lord, for you are a faithful God. Psalm 31:3–5
Challenges will certainly come as we make it our lives’ goal to love and serve Christ with a whole heart. However, in the end, we will have the privilege of knowing how God used us in the midst of challenges—how he guided us, protected us, and produced fruit for his kingdom through our lives. Written by Martin Luther between 1527 and 1529, the hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” has served as a testament and reminder of God’s protective love. This song has been treasured for generations as a proclamation of God’s power and shelter. Whatever challenges you will face in this life, know the Lord is your faithful fortress. May the words of Luther’s powerful hymn encourage you this morning: A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe does seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him.4
You are my fortress, my Lord, my God. Amen!
But rescue us from the evil one.
