WORD
He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. 1 Timothy 2:6
THOUGHT
The end of the United States War of Independence from the British Empire was marked by the signing of the Treaty of Paris (1783). The document was a declaration containing the promise of peace, hope, and the path for continued freedom. The treaty between the two former enemies contained the commitment to “forget all past misunderstandings and differences that have unhappily interrupted the good correspondence and friendship which they mutually wish to restore.”2 Lives were sacrificed to purchase the liberty that Americans now enjoy. However, an earlier battle in history contained an even greater sacrifice for an even greater liberty. The battle was waged for the souls of humanity, fought between the darkness of evil and the light of Christ. Jesus willingly sacrificed his life to create a way to liberate humanity from the captivity of sin. His strategy and ultimate victory brought freedom and redemption to God’s original plan, which was to experience the apex of relationships. God and humanity were restored, and with even more power, depth, and permanency than the reconciliation of earthly kingdoms, our sins are forgiven and forgotten—forever.
PRAYER
Lord, thank you for forgiving and forgetting the sin that held me prisoner and separated me from you. Thank you for restoration. Thank you for the depth of your mercy and the freedom of your grace. Amen.
Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
