WORD Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (or Jebus, as it used to be called), where the Jebusites, the original inhabitants of the land, were living. The people of Jebus taunted David, saying, “You’ll never get in here!” But David captured the fortress of Zion, which is now called the City of David. 1 Chronicles 11:4–5 THOUGHT The Jebusites once controlled Jerusalem and, at the time, the city was called Jebus. One day, David and all Israel gathered and looked upon the fortress of Zion, prepared to place it in the hands of its rightful owners. The Jebusites thought they were impenetrable. In their overzealous self-confidence, they mocked David and his army and shouted, “You’ll never get in here!” Fearless, determined, and undaunted, David pursued what he knew to be the will of God. He met the Jebusites in battle and the next thing recorded is the fall of Jebus, along with the presentation of the city’s new name: the City of David. Regardless of the strength of the enemy that stands against us, regardless of his threat, intimidation, tactical advantages, or strategies used to instill fear, if the Lord has spoken his will, victory is ensured. God declares his will and conquest follows. He is the Deliverer and the Overcomer. He is the victor over all evil. PRAYER Father, you are all powerful and all glorious. You are the conqueror, the Lord of All! In you I place my trust. Amen. But rescue us from the evil one.
