WORD ...for I know that as you pray for me and the Spirit of Jesus Christ helps me, this will lead to my deliverance. Philippians 1:19 THOUGHT A letter from Paul to friends revealed his confidence in the power of their prayers— power that would lead to his deliverance from the prison cell he was unjustly thrown into. Paul had been falsely accused of inciting a riot in Philippi and sent to prison, but his stay was short as the Lord miraculously delivered him (Acts 16:20–25). Their prayers were not in vain. Every Christian who has faced challenges has called on faithful friends to pray for them in the midst of trial. When others intercede on our behalf, there is an unmatched confidence which arises in the heart of the believer in Christ. Our shared love, faith, and prayers will strengthen one another in times of need. I have certainly been the glad and encouraged recipient of these prayers in times past, and will no doubt be in need of them again in the future. These corporate prayers are a strong and effective weapon given us by God to build up our faith and to lead us, for as Christ himself taught us, “If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them” (Matt. 18:19–20). PRAYER Father, I am truly grateful for the brothers and sisters in Christ you have placed in my life. I am grateful for their friendship, encouragement, and prayers for me. Thank you for placing us in your family and in the bond of spiritual community. Thank you for hearing our prayers as we pray for one another. Amen. Don’t let us yield to temptation.
