WORD Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Proverbs 3:5–6 THOUGHT With a new year approaching, our thoughts shift from reflection on the past year to the fresh year before us. Ahead of us are a new calendar year and an unfolding future. There are new commitments to make, possibilities to explore, goals to attain, and resolutions to uphold. In all of the commitments, possibilities, goals, and resolutions we face in the year ahead, we must keep the kingdom of God in mind. The character of God and his will for us should be at the center of our plans, and we should seek him in all we set out to do. And we must remember: the values of God’s kingdom and the values of the world we live in are often opposite of one another. Although the world may encourage us to gather treasure for ourselves for our earthly security, stability, and pleasure, God encourages us to invest in eternity and to give ourselves away for the good of others. The world says to get even, but God says to forgive. The world advises us to trust only in what we see, touch, and understand, but God commands us to trust only in Him. The world leads us to do what we want and what will make us happy, but God reminds us to search out his will in all we do. In the end, his will contains real treasure and real joy. PRAYER Lord, I pray that as the future unfolds I will wisely seek your heart in all matters and trust you fully. Your will for me is perfect and good. Amen. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
